Song Club #8: The Record You Wish You'd Written
I believe most songwriters have at least one of these: that album that, upon hearing it, expresses ourselves and our musical desires so crisply, so perfectly that we wish we’d written it.
I believe most songwriters have at least one of these: that album that, upon hearing it, expresses ourselves and our musical desires so crisply, so perfectly that we wish we’d written it. Perhaps we’re also sure we could have—if we’d only gotten there first.
For me, the first record that did this was "On Night" by Australian songwriter and author Holly Throsby. I remember listening to the song ‘Things Between People’ and feeling that someone had sung truths about my own life I was only just starting to understand. I listened to just about nothing but that album for a solid six months. Probably longer. It also influenced my songwriting for years to come.
This week, I want you to get deep with the record you wish you’d written. I recommend starting with the Creative Mission for this one.
Have fun, and don’t get lost in the nostalgia,
Lucy
