Song Club #5: Dark Academia

This week, I’ve been sucked into the internet aesthetic and literary genre Dark Academia. ICYMI, Dark Academia emerged around 2015 on Tumblr, and between now and then has evolved into a popular and beloved genre in fiction, film, and television. It tends to be concerned with intellectualism, hidden knowledge, and intrigue. It often features imagery of old library, grand architecture, mysterious passages, decaying buildings, and a lot of tweed.
Beyond my fascination with tropes and imagery, it’s got me thinking about how art outside of music can influence and provide inspiration for our own songwriting. There is such richness to draw from in other texts. Sometimes all that’s required is for us to show up with our music-making brains and start exploring!
Keep going!
