Song Club #4: Water
Water is essential to life, and yet I barely think about it most days. I forget that my body is mostly water.
Water is essential to life, and yet I barely think about it most days. I forget that my body is mostly water. I forget that water is always in the air. I forget to hydrate (real talk). I forget about freighters, and sewage, and the water required to make the clothes I wear.
Beyond the quotidian, water is gorgeous and awesomely powerful. There is a beauty to large bodies of water, be they seeming to sit still or rushing over a cliff, that makes them worthy of wonder—or a road-trip. Oceans call to us, and rivers follow us down. Many of us have creeks or beaches at the center of formative memories. Water is everywhere and it touches so much of our existence.
This week, in your writing I want you to explore ideas and memories surrounding water in your own life, and beyond.
Keep going!
Lucy
SONG PROVOCATIONS
Write a song that feels like the movement of water
To do this, you might play with sonic textures or time signatures or finger picking patterns, or all three. Experiment with creating the movement of different bodies of water: the waves of a lake, the burble of a stream, the constant wash of a river. Bonus points if the song also has a watery setting.
