Song Club #35: Despair
Not the Song Club you wanted, but *perhaps* the Song Club you never knew you needed
I’ve said it before in Song Club, but it bears repeating. Some of the absolute best songs come from heavy emotion: from saying things that people usually don’t, or wouldn’t—from admitting it out loud.
Songs that occupy spaces of despair (and grief and regret) hit me right in the solar plexus. From the hopelessness and self-recrimination present in Johnny Cash’s cover of Hurt, or the lonely, broken pleas in Breath Me by Sia, the dark honesty in such songs is revealing and moving. Or at least I find it to be.
So this week, I thought why not bring ‘despair’ to Song Club 😏. It’s a tough topic, but I believe a worthwhile one. Let’s did in together!
Big love and keep going,
Lucy
SONG PROVOCATIONS
Write a song that personifies despair as a character.
What would it say? How would it sing it? What kind of mood does the character of despair bring to a song? Is despair itself despairing? Or does it perhaps it finds glee in making other despair?
