In British English, ’the small hours’ are the hours between midnight and dawn—not quite night and not quite morning. Despite their name, the small hours are full hours. They contain the fuzzy end of dark-time revery, nightshift workers, sleeping houses, aching quiet, and the loudest thoughts you’ll ever hear.
Small hours can be sacred hours, or stolen hours. Sometimes they ripple with electricity. Sometimes they’re still. They blue, or orange, or ink black. For some they’re filled with trouble, and others they’re the only time that feels truly safe.
This week, in your writing I want you to explore the small hours in your own life, and beyond.
Happy songwriting!
Lucy
SONG PROVOCATIONS
Write a song about an event in your life that occurred in the small hours
The event could be something that happens most nights, or something that happened once and never again. It might be in your home, or out in the world. The potential for heavy material might be a little stronger in this prompt than most, so be gentle with yourself.
