Song Club #19: Weather
Weather bring us into the physical space of a song with heightened intensity
QUICK NOTE: Through May, I’m trying experiment where I share my weekly efforts to write a song a week—using these prompts. In doing this, my hope is to create a space where y’all might feel safe doing the same.
I’m looking for ways to make Song Club feel like an active and supportive community, as opposed to a broadcast. This is just one experiment in doing so. LMK how it feels?
I’m still in Brisbane, Australia. The weather of this place is a feature for me: sunny days with high humidity stretching well into Autumn and wide skies with sudden heavy rain. The weather has been like this, the classic Brisbane type, all week. Naturally, it’s on my mind.
In songwriting, weather is another staple. It’s used to evoke feeling states, or create a moody backdrop for emotionally roiling stories. From hurricanes to blistering white sun on a summer day, weather bring us into the physical space of a song with heightened intensity. It’s neat trick, if used well.
So, this week, I want us to explore weather in our writing!
Keep going,
Lucy
