On using cultural movements as toolkits for creative work
How constraints from past movements can inspire present work
I had a lightning bolt moment earlier today when I conceptualized artistic movements as complete toolkits, for the first time.
Let me explain: the way I’ve understood my own practice in the context all that came before me is as one of pastiche. I draw from a rich archive of prior styles and works ad hoc. I mix and match and make something new. I had never, prior to this morning, thought of drawing a (somewhat arbitrary) line around the techniques and works of a particular movement and using that as a my only toolkit for a creative project.
It has occurred to me this might not be a novel thought for everyone. For those who already do this, I’d love to hear about your process in the comments. For the rest of us, here are my emerging thoughts on how we might use cultural movements as complete toolkits.
Big love and keep going!Â

How to turn a cultural movement into a toolkit
MEMO - Extract and distill
Begin by identifying and distilling the essential principles, techniques and works of the artistic movement you’ve chosen. (Ideally the movement you choose will be in a different medium to your own creative work.)
Compile a list of key principles and techniques associated with the movement. For example, if you've selected Surrealism, focus on techniques such as automatic writing, dream imagery, and unexpected juxtapositions. Next, look for works that typify the movement and inspire you. Create a reference collection of these works.
MEMO - Create a process notebook
With essential techniques extracted, create a practical process guide to help you apply these to your own work. For example, if the movement emphasizes spontaneity, your process might include steps for free-form creation or improvisation. Work through each principle and technique, thinking creatively about how you might apply it in your given medium.
MEMO - Implement and refine
With your process guide and reference works in hand, begin using the toolkit in your own creative project. As you work, focus on adhering to the prescribed techniques and maintaining alignment with the movement’s principles. Note where these constraints feel helpful, offering answers and momentum and where they seem to hinder you. Your insights here can be worked back into your general creative process.
I’d love to hear from you in the comments: What movement are you excited to turn into a toolkit?
