How does your home help you be creative?
Thoughts on tuning in to how you use space to support your songwriting
Right now, I’m sitting in my mother’s home office in Australia writing this to you all. It’s a small but thoughtfully designed space, full of drawing, making, and fixing materials. She has very kindly allowed MVM to take up residence in it, while I’m visiting.
It’s got me thinking about the importance of space when it comes to our creative practice. How different spaces prime us for different types of thinking, different types of activities.
When I sit down at my desk at home in Brooklyn, I can’t not go into focussed work mode (well, mostly). The arm chair in our bedroom has become a place I play and write music. And predictably, when I sit on our couch in front of the TV I zone TF out.
I’m not an expert on space, nor space as it applies to creative practice, but I experiment with it a fair bit.
This week, some thoughts on these ideas.
Big love,Â

On tuning in to how you use space
MEMO - What activities does your home prime your for?
Have a think. Are there certain rooms or pieces of furniture you always go to do specific activities? How does it feel to use these spaces in this way? Are any crying out for a change? Are there are spaces that just don’t feel right for what you try to do in them? How might you change that?
MEMO - How do you support creative practice via your spaces?
Often what makes a space work well for a creative practice or activity is in the details of the surrounding furniture, decoration, and materials at hand. Being comfortable is important. Having whatever you need do you creative work be organized and/or close by is important. How are you supporting and not supporting your creative practice with the set-up of your space?
MEMO - On the topic of music specifically, where do you write?
This is something to simply start noticing. Are there multiple places that feel good to write? Are you trying to write in spots that don’t really support what you’re trying to do? How might you set-up the space in which you write music to prime you for getting in flow and writing songs?
I’d love to hear from you in the comments: What’s your favorite place to be creative in your home?
