This week I’m having a birthday, so I’ve been thinking a lot about celebration and pleasure and how its often missing from my songwriting—unless I’m intentional about it. Something about turning the particular age I’m turning has also got me thinking about the hidden parts of ourselves and the permission to fully express those parts so many of us crave but don’t believe we have.
So, this week I’m sharing a new pre-writing ritual designed to get you in a freer space and working from your own exuberance and pleasure.
It’s called Arise, Alter Ego! and I hope you have fun with it.
Keep going!

Arise, Alter Ego!
An experiment in writing from a playful, pleasurable place
Use this experiment as a way to get ready for a songwriting session where you want to feel playful, powerful and loose.
Step One: Get moving
Throw on some music that makes you feel yourself. Move to that music. Let yourself move freely — be sexy, be weird, be big, be small, be anything.
Step Two: Uncover your character
As you move, notice the movements that feel especially natural, or pleasurable, or powerful — imagine this is your alter ego, uncovered in your body.
Step Three: Name your character
Who is this new person moving so pleasurably, so powerfully? What do they call themselves? It can be anything you want. After all, Ziggy Stardust and Sasha Fierce are real ideas.
Step Four: Dress your character
Climb into your closet and look for an item or two this character would wear. They might be items you don’t typically allow yourself to wear. You can wear these items when you’re writing to evoke the energy and perspective of your alter-ego.
And now you’re ready to write! Have fun!
